Passage Reading: Isaiah 30-32
In today’s text, we see at the beginning of both ch. 30 and 31 a major criticism of Judah. When the nation of Assyria was on the rise and going to be coming against them, at one point of time they sent ambassadors to Egypt to request help, to save them! God speaks through Isaiah and calls them out for this sin because this plan wasn’t from God, they didn’t seek His direction (30:4), they sought refuge with Pharaoh but not the Most high! One of the reasons being they didn’t want to hear the truth, rejecting prophets and seers (30:9-10). God later speaks and says woe to those who trust in Egypt’s chariots and horses and who do not look to the holy one of Israel (31:1) the Egyptians aren’t God, their horses aren’t Spirit (31:3) whereas the Lord is God and He is wise and does what He pleases. For one when He makes plans He doesn’t call them back because He is all knowing from the start! (v2). How foolish they are to pursue these other options!
But at the end of the day they would rather remain in their sin and try and find natural solutions to their problems, rather than turning in faith and repentance to the Lord to find forgiveness and the answers they needed. It’s easier in their minds to not amend their ways and continue on with what they’re doing, and to find a natural solution, when all along the problem came from their disobedience to God.
How often does this happen today! Definitely something to think about. Ought the people of God not to first turn to God in humble contrition of heart and seek His face before seeking worldly answers to their problems? How about for the Church?
