Once again, we see that in the midst of turmoil, Jeremiah is given a message of hope. This time about the security of God’s covenant.
Back in 2 Samuel 7, King David was given a promise from God. David had purposed to build God a house, a temple for worship. God forbids it, but instead promises to build David a house, a lasting dynasty. God promised, “And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Sam. 7:16). This promise is referenced many times throughout the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and it was a source of hope for Judah all throughout this time. It was God’s promise to David that kept someone reigning on the throne in Judah for centuries to come.
Now, with Nebuchadnezzar coming after Jerusalem, Jeremiah receives this message from God regarding the security of this covenant with David. David is long gone, but God had made promises to him, and God was still around. Even better, God perfectly keeps His promises! God says through Jeremiah, “If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers” (Jer. 33:20-21).
In the midst of coming destruction, there is a message of hope that one day the throne will be inhabited again. Judah will return to their land, again. They will have one of their own, a son of David, reigning over them, again.
We know that eventually all of these things are fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of David. The great high priest, and the Messianic King. All of these truths ought to remind us of God’s faithfulness to His covenant. Jeremiah shows us today that God’s covenant is more secure than the morning sunrise!
So, if you didn’t doubt the coming of the sun this morning, and expected it would be here, and if you don’t doubt it’ll be nighttime at nighttime tonight, then remember God’s covenant-promises are more secure than that. Here originally given to David, then fulfilled in the Son of David, who has brought to us a new covenant and the secure hope and promise of eternal life (see Titus 1:2). He is a faithful, covenant-keeping God.
